From Ad IDEM / CMLA
AdIDEM/CMLA members are lawyers representing the media across Canada.
Associate Members, who may or may not be lawyers, have had experience in issues involving media law and free expression, and are advocates for free expression as well.
We are in an age where information is communicated around the world, in the blink of an eye. Traditional or mainstream media are no longer the sole source of news, with bloggers and tweeters pushing out factoids in 140 characters or less. But trained journalists offer a critical and credible source of information. Journalists cover the courts and government; they investigate and break stories we didn’t know existed. They give people information to enliven public debate and inform decisions on the working of our democratic institutions. In Canada, section 2(b) of the Charter affirms our fundamental freedoms of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press.
So, who is Ad IDEM/CMLA and where do we fit in? Members of our Association include the very best media lawyers across Canada who are dedicated to free expression. We are the faces behind the action to “get it lawyered”. We support and enhance our clients’ efforts to access information - whether in a court file or in the hands of a public body. We challenge overly broad publication bans and confidentiality orders and we resist efforts to co-opt the media into becoming an investigative arm of the police. We work hard to educate all participants in the justice system as to what a fair and open trial looks like. We don’t just follow the law; we strive to make the law better. As a group, our members share best practices to enhance free expression, not only within Canada but also from below the 49th parallel and across the pond in England and Scotland. In virtually every key free expression decision from the Supreme Court of Canada in the past 20 years, you will find our members as counsel of record.
In 2014, our organization celebrated 20 years; in November 2017, our annual conference will be in Toronto. We hope to see you there and, until then, encourage you to explore this site and follow our twitter feed @CanMediaLawyers.
