Rick Dearden specializes in media law, international trade law and tax litigation. Mr. Dearden has acted as media counsel for over 20 years in libel actions, freedom of the press challenges pursuant to section 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights And Freedoms and Access To Information Act reviews in the Federal Court of Canada. Mr. Dearden has appeared in Ontario Courts at all levels on behalf of the media and acted on behalf of the Canadian Association of Journalists as intervenant's counsel in five appeals before the Supreme Court of Canada involving freedom of the press. Rick was Chair of the International Bar Association's Media Law Committee for four years, is a member of the Advocates Society and received the President's Award from the Centre for Investigative Journalism for furthering the cause of investigative journalism in Canada. Mr. Dearden frequently writes about media law issues including a chapter in the book Freedom Of Expression And The Charter entitled "Constitutional Protection For Defamatory Words Published About The conduct Of Public Officials" and a paper published in the Law Society Of Upper Canada Special Lectures about "Problems Of Proof For The Media In Freedom Of The Press Charter Cases". Mr. Dearden has also spoken frequently about libel, Charter and freedom of information issues at conferences hosted by the International Bar Association, Canadian Bar Association, Canadian Association of Journalists, Law Society of Upper Canada and the Annenberg Washington Program.
